Okay… So I’m not a huge fan of We Are Young. The lyrics in the verse confused and sort of annoyed me (blah, people getting high in the bathroom and having destructive relationships, who cares?) and the verse/chorus are so weirdly disconnected musically - it’s like they’re from different songs.
BUT.
I heard Some Nights (Fun’s newest song) on the radio yesterday, and I absolutely love it. It’s epic, raw, and just… jaw-dropping. Somehow, it feels more honest and authentic than We Are Young - the lyrics feel so personal, the vocals are a lot more emotional, and the instrumentation (esp. the epic drums) really echoes this intense emotion. Maybe Some Nights feels more authentic than its predecessor because We Are Young is polished and contained like most ‘radio ready’ songs. But I know a ton of people love We Are Young, so I guess my preference is just personal taste.
Needless to say, I will be giving the rest of Fun’s music a second chance!
